URBICUS

Urbicus has carried out all kinds of projects for regional development at various locations and contrasting sites since it was founded by Jean-Marc Gaulier in 1996. The agency works to transform landscapes whose public or private organisations entrust the work to us. Urbicus (in Latin ‘of the city’ ), experimented with the consequences of civility projected in nature and nature projected in towns. In Architectes x paysagistes [Architects x landscape architects], the x is the botanical symbol for hybridisation. It is our methodological signature. It represents the intersection of skills and the cross-cutting approach of the reflection applied to our projects and necessary for a modern-day approach to land development issues. As town planners, architects and landscape architects, we approach the landscape as a relevant way of tackling urban issues.

Architects, town planners, landscape architects and engineers, the agency’s skills are applied to very diverse types of projects:
– Reassessment of natural spaces, rivers or coastlines under urban or tourist pressure,
– Development of public spaces that provide structure and equip the city,
– Urban renewal or urban development projects,
– Infrastructure displacement or harbours designed as landscapes projects
– Natural and urban parks and gardens.

We structure the space, organise usages, reveal the uniqueness of the geography, we carry on stories, equip cities, restore the countryside, renew neighbourhoods, and manage the time that passes.

The city, landscape or land project is always a request for transformation. The project is the meeting point of a request and a site. Progress provides the programme with identity; prioritising the issues is the skeleton of the project and managing its use during project management. We want to be creative, in the precision of the responses made to the diagnoses posed, to the challenges formulated and to the relevance of the scenarios of proposed projects. Our projects are not the expression of the landscapers’ ego, but wanting to enhance the existing, by exposing its qualities and transcend the programme in the understanding of the challenges of sustainable development.

Sustainability is the very essence of the landscape. The landscape is a living and inhabited architecture, a human and natural system, and an economic and social balance. Sustainable landscape is the dynamic intersection of viable, liveable and equitable. Finding this balance point for each project requires listening carefully to the land, ownership of the programme and managing its economy. We design the project’s work as a shared endeavour, work carried out jointly by us and our clients. A sustainable project results from a three-way dialogue between policy makers, the inhabitants and the project manager. We reject hierarchical decision models, negotiation is the driving force of shared projects, consultation on the status of accepted projects and communicating the assurance of the projects included.
