Wagon Landscaping was founded by two landscape architects, François Vadepied and Mathieu Gontier. Based in France, the studio works primarily across France and Europe. Since 2010, the team has expanded to include Estelle Ollivier, Constance Criqui, Nathan Mercier, and Léa Nourdin.

Wagon Landscaping received 2024 LILA office Award.

The Wagon-Landscaping philosophy

Wagon Landscaping’s philosophy is rooted in a gardener’s attitude toward landscape practice and design: to remain open to experimentation, observation, and adaptation. The studio seeks to imagine places that are easy to use and maintain, and pleasant to inhabit in everyday life.

Project concepts emerge through hands-on practice and direct engagement with landscape and gardening, by observing plants and natural dynamics. The projects embrace constraints on material use and movement, limit energy consumption, and emphasize recycling processes and ecological dynamics.

This approach to landscape practice is also shared through teaching at schools of landscape architecture in France (ESAJ in Paris / ENSP in Marseille), in Europe and in the USA.

The Wagon-Landscaping project approach

In Wagon Landscaping’s approach, construction and gardening are integral from the very first stages of project conception. The jackhammer on site is as essential as the pencil on paper. Design methodology is based on a continuous back-and-forth between the studio and the site, considering process as the foundation of project development.

The studio works across a wide range of contemporary landscape themes, including housing, public spaces, parks, and gardens, in both urban and rural contexts. Its working method relies on constant dialogue between site and design, always seeking the most appropriate way for a project to evolve and adapt to its context.

Sobriety and minimalism create opportunities for sharing experience, knowledge, and practices, allowing projects to evolve in an open and adaptive way for users such as technical services, residents, gardeners, schools, associations, and social reintegration programs.

The studio promotes a multi-skilled approach within the team, enabling it to address a wide range of subjects without specialization or reliance on predefined project formulas. Through its multidisciplinary practice, Wagon Landscaping emphasizes the idea of each project as a unique case, requiring a specific and adapted response, with a strong focus on spatial quality and living dynamics for both human and non-human life.
