VWA

Switzerland

VWA is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary practice working on landscape, urban design, and architecture as well as temporary installations. Exploring the intersection of these realms is essential to our design process which occurs on a wide variety of scales. We approach the macro and micro-scale simultaneously with the same level of attention. Conceptual process at VWA is one of both/and rather than either/or. We try to combine polarities rather than accept them as mutually exclusive: to draw inspiration from tradition but also to innovate, to learn from natural systems but also acknowledge human intervention, to use an abstract yet figuratively resonant formal language, to create sober yet sensual environments.

Parks & gardens

Landscape architecture reflects the aspirations of a society at a specific time and place. Open space design responds to our current needs : human comfort, new experiences and distinctive identities, social connections, recreation and leisure activities, environmental richness.

Squares & streets

The increasing density and need for mobility in cities require a rethinking of open spaces. They allow people to interact, connect and exchange on multiple levels, facilitating and weaving continuities. Landscape architecture heightens the legibility, functionality and aesthetic qualities of these urban spaces.

Street furniture

Thoughtful consideration of details is essential to design quality so as to optimise use of space, to offer comfort and reinforce the experience of a site. The body feels welcomed in the city through its relationship with urban furniture which act as benchmarks in the vast open space.

Play spaces

Creative design of play spaces can foster physical and psychological development. It provides stimulation for children’s imagination and creativity as well as building confidence in motor skills.

Urban agriculture

Based on and fostering reciprocity between agricultural and urban territories, emergent urban agriculture can add to the range of uses for urban open spaces today.

Private gardens

Using subtlety, ingenuity and sensibility, without forgetting pragmatism, the landscape architect plays with perceptions, sparking interest. As an extension of the home, the garden becomes the site of multiple activities, generating both pleasure and memories.

Architecture

We aim for comfort, providing functional, sober yet sensually pleasing spaces. Natural light plays a fundamental role, establishing a temporal link with daily rhythms and spatial link between exterior and interior.

Planning & urbanism

Planning aims to preserve and enhance a territory’s appeal, so as to guarantee good living conditions for future generations. Using a participative process, the designer and the community exchange on the project. The new urban form that ensues brings vitality to the region and creates a coherent identity. Thus neighbourhoods are based on the particularities of the site and reconnect with the past and its traditions, while anticipating future needs and aspirations.
