Of the Architectural in the Landscape
Vibrancy and functionality, beauty and efficiency, simplicity and distinction, respect and renewal, planning and spontaneity – we create living spaces and an experience of the landscape that is based on a carefully calculated duality of opposites . Plants are at the core of our work, but the architectural helps us to order and use the wildness of the plants. We do not see landscape architecture as art, but rather as a congenial combination of creative engineering and horticultural craftsmanship. The result is always important: people’s well-being and the fulfilment of a site’s functional requirements.
What began in 1951 as an office in landscape architect Heinrich Raderschall’s living room has now been carefully growing for more than six decades. My involvement with RMP started 21 years ago, and in 2004 I became the firm’s sole owner. Since 2019 I have shared overall responsibility with three associated partners. 2021 marks the 16th year my team and I have been actively involved with every facet of landscape architecture, landscape planning and urban planning.
In 2007 we decided to open a new branch of the office in Hamburg because of the planning and construction of the International Garden Show 2013 – today’s Inselpark Wilhelmsburg. Seven years later a team in Mannheim started working on a variety of projects including the Grünzug Nordost open space system and the Federal Garden Show 2023. And since 2016 we have also had an office in Berlin, where we focus on the creative examination of current landscape architecture and urban planning projects and issues within the framework of national and international competitions. In 2018, a twelve-person planning team also started working in the heart of Cologne, the “Cathedral City”. Our day-to day work there involves the redesign of the central Via Culturalis as well as participation in design competitions. In both Cologne and Mannheim we have continuously expanded and increased the size of our offices.
Currently, 76 landscape architects and engineers at five locations cover the entire spectrum of landscape architecture and planning. A special feature of our offices is their integrative use of complementary fields of work. And having our own in-house construction management specialists guarantees the comprehensive construction and supervision of projects from one source. Our commitment to new, forward-looking and interdisciplinary methods of working helps us to optimise our interaction with both planning partners and clients. One current example of this is our approach to open-space planning using Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology.
In addition to our daily work in the design and planning of urban living spaces such as plazas, pedestrian zones, outdoor areas for private and public buildings, sports and recreation facilities and parks, we also have a special expertise in feasibility studies and large-scale framework planning.
Underlying all of this are our efforts to strengthen and define places and to give them value with the help of a consistent competency of landscape architectural design in order to anchor them in people’s consciousness in the long term.
