Ultra-Ruin is a wooden architectural organism that is growing from the ruins of an abandoned red brick farmhouse in the meeting place of terraced farms and jungle. The weak architecture follows the principles of Open Form and is improvised on the site based on instincts reacting on the presence of jungle, ruin and local knowledge.

In 2011, together with Polyform Arkitekter, Karres en Brands won the international competition for the redesign of the museum garden of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. The design, ‘SMK tilbage i Parken’ (SMK returns in the Park) connects the museum garden with the Østre Anlæg park, located on the city’s former fortifications. With this, the SMK will become naturally embedded in the park, by which it in fact revises the previous situation.

The garden successfully builds on the relation between the surrounding landscape and the site. On one side of the house, it uses the approach of borrowed landscapes, establishing a connection between the garden and the pastorality of the adjacent agricultural land. On the other side of the plot it makes a clear differentiation, a contrast between the meadow and the lush woods. The garden also offers a sequence of various interesting ambiences.

Up until the end of the 1970s, building rubble, domestic refuse and industrial waste had been deposited in the Georgswerder landfill. In the early 80s it had already been established that leachate water from the landfill site contained particularly hazardous dioxins, which is why this site gained a sad fame in that time.
