OKRA Wins International Competition with Roma Continua

News —

An international team led by IT’S, OMA, and OKRA landscape architects has won the “Vision for Rome” competition, organised by the Roma REgeneration Foundation. The winning proposal, Roma Continua, was selected from six finalist entries by Italian and international teams.

The proposal reimagines Rome not as a city defined by expansion, but as a living landscape metropolis built on recalibration and adaptive reuse. It is structured around four principles: well-being, beauty, knowledge, and reform and extension.“

On well-being, the plan identifies five green corridors anchored in the Tiber and its tributaries, along which five multimodal mobility hubs serve as “forums of innovation,” integrating housing, transport, cultural programs, and public amenities. On beauty, tourism is redistributed beyond the historic centre through direct rail connections to lesser-known destinations across the city and region. On knowledge, five clusters around the hubs bring together startups, universities, and established industries within a climate-resilient framework. On reform and extension, underused sites are transformed through adaptive reuse and targeted new construction into residential, cultural, and research programs.

“Roma Continua frames Rome as a continuous landscape in transformation—an approach shaped through international collaboration and driven by our commitment to climate adaptation across diverse contexts“, says Lourdes Barrios Ayala, senior landscape architect at OKRA

“Our visionary plan fundamentally questions what growth means for a contemporary city profoundly shaped by history, culture, and power,” said OMA Managing Partner David Gianotten. “By realigning infrastructure, nature, and reuse, we aim to establish the conditions through which Rome can continue to evolve on its own terms over the next 25 years.”

The full team includes IT’S, OMA, OKRA, NET Engineering, LGSMA, Open Impact, Artelia, Atribune, Elena Granata, Fiamma Montezemolo, Costanza Profumo, and Davide Marino.
