The Mt Pleasant Community Centre is based at the bottom of a large hill suburb with the main Christchurch estuary on it’s east side. Our involvement in this project included the development of concept designs, detailed design and documentation, and included the project management for all the external spaces, carpark and pedestrian plaza. The architecture of this building was inspired by the natural beauty of the Heathcote Avon Estuary, biodiversity, ecosystems and adaption and our role was to ensure that these core values were reflected in the outdoor spaces to create a fluidity between the building and the surrounding landscape. The design of the community centre celebrates the estuary’s significance as an important habitat for migratory birds, an educational resource and recreational playground, while becoming a key focal point along the newly established Christchurch Coastal Pathway.
