Mimesis in art is imitation—representation of nature or reality. Its central role collapsed with time, most notably and radically with the rise of abstract art and conceptual practices (Duchamp, Malevich, etc.), breaking with the demand to copy appearances. In landscape architecture, however, mimesis lingers: designs often simulate “nature” by appearances that suggest ecological function without delivering it.
