The Green New Deal is a policy framework that pairs large-scale climate action with broader social goals such as job creation, economic growth, and reduced inequality, modelled on the original New Deal's public works response to the Great Depression. It calls for a rapid transition to renewable energy and resource efficiency, alongside investments in public housing, healthcare, and infrastructure. Central to the framework is the principle of a just transition, ensuring that communities of color, Indigenous peoples, and low-income populations, those most historically burdened by environmental and economic injustice, are equitably included in, and benefit from, the shift to a decarbonized economy.
Interview with Billy Fleming on landscape architecture’s service to capital and what design could become in a just postcarbon transition: moving beyond heroic projects toward public ownership, community power, land justice and political action.
