Sustainable Landscape Design and Development Master’s Program: Open Application 2023

The role of sustainable design and development of urban open spaces and landscapes is becoming increasingly important and demands for international post-graduate programs focusing on these issues is growing. It is, therefore, crucial to enable students to acquire the qualifications to address the global challenges we are facing today in the context of urbanization and environmental protection.

With the Sustainable Landscape Design and Development master’s program, the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts OWL is targeting this international group of potential students. The master’s course is accredited by the German Accreditation Council and first started in the fall of 2021. The language of instruction for this 2-year master’s program is English.

The master’s program focuses on landscape design and development, addressing social, ecological and aesthetic dimensions in an integrated way. The research and design-based program combines the long German tradition of integrating landscape architecture and planning with an innovative approach to landscape design and development. It addresses 21st-century challenges such as climate change, biodiversity, energy needs, health, food security, accelerating urbanization, and migration, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Students obtain an insight into the field of landscape design and development, acquire related typological knowledge, develop a critical understanding of different methods and gain experience in techniques and tools. This enables them to understand and intervene in different international contexts and to develop innovative landscape design and planning solutions at all scales, ranging from urban open spaces to urban systems, larger landscapes, and territories.

The program of the first two semesters consists of a series of compulsory (1st semester) and elective (2nd semester) courses taught separately, as well as an urban landscape project and a landscape planning and development project that address realistic assignments. In the 3rd semester students undertake an internship and the 4th semester is dedicated to the master’s thesis.

Admission

The master’s program is open to highly-qualified international applicants with a 3- year Bachelor’s degree in the field of landscape architecture and planning, and of related subjects such as architecture, urban design and planning, and environmental planning.
