VEGA landskab was founded by Anne Galmar and Anne Dorthe Vestergaard back in 2009. In the beginning as two separate design studios but since 2012 VEGA has been a joint design studio with offices in Aarhus and in Copenhagen.
Our Vision
We strive to make a difference with our landscapes. We see the landscape as the common ground that connects us (across gender, age, religion, and social divides) in meaningful and active communities with each other and with what is growing.
The way in which we engage in communities has changed and keeps changing. Today the experience and perception of a natural community are challenged since a greater part of our lives takes place in private spaces and many of our communities are connected through virtual devices. The landscape has great potential to be the framework that can connect us in visible, physical, and real communities.
Our landscapes are sensory. We want people to feel their bodies through sensory impressions – such as smells, movements, sounds and visual experiences. When being in a landscape you are present, and when present in a landscape the ability to meet other people occur. You sense and feel yourself – and others – in the world.
In addition to stimulating social and individual experiences, the landscape is furthermore a tool that can provide solutions for the changing climate challenges. The landscape can solve the challenges of heavier precipitation, rising sea levels and surface water, so that cities and housing areas avoid damage from flooding. By diversifying the landscape by implementing more species-rich and wild nature the necessary biodiversity can be increased. Our landscapes offer many solutions, but always a sensory value, where the coastal protection is a beautiful sitting edge, the rainwater lake becomes a buzzing learning space and the variety of species reminds us that the seasons change.
For us, sustainability is about how we minimize the use of materials, promote local recycling and, above all, make projects so robust that they can last for many years. In that way, the resources we use will last year after year and provide value for our future generations. Social sustainability is found in our insistence on accommodating maximum diversity in the use of our landscapes and through our vision of designing for communities.
Our aim is to create robust and beautiful projects that solve current issues and challenges but also are aesthetic and up-to-date. Projects that reach forward in time but always are anchored in the specific place and history. Our projects are easy to engage with as the perception of the landscape can be simple, site-specific and natural. However, the path to simplicity is rarely simple. It takes time and requires care, where analyses and sketched solutions are tested before decisions are made and built. That’s why we know – before we build and construct – how our projects will work – and that they will work!
