k1 Landschaftsarchitekten: The entire area for the 2014 state horticultural show in Deggendorf, Bavaria, has been restructured to create distinct new landscape zones. A “tree curtain” acts as a buffer to the busy road Neusiedlerstrasse, and a new multi-funtional space has been created between the dike and “tree curtain”. The Deichgärten (dike gardens) and promenade upon the dike are an important piece of green-infrastructure, acting as a collector – distributor for the various zones, and providing access to the new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the river Danube. The Donaupark (Danube-park) on the banks of the River Danube has been developed for peaceful relaxation and forms an esplanade on the river side of the dike.

A new car park is integrated into the flood protection dike, the roof of which forms the new Deichgärten. This green roof extends over a hectare, and integrates corten steel planting beds, a water feature and opportunities for sport and play. As part of the Deichgärten, the Danube playground plays a particular highlight – not only during the horicultural show, but as a permanent attraction. The playground depicts in a playful wavy blue rubber surface, the river Danube, from its source to the Black Sea, with play-stations presenting the cutural characteristics of the cities located along the its length. The wavy blue ribbon-like surface forms a parkour for running, jumping and sitting, together with the surrounding landform and play elements. At the ‚mouth’ of the Danube a large water-play area represents the Black Sea, with opportunities to dam, pump, splash and spray alongside sand and sludge play areas.

Unlike the linear dike-promenade, the river-promenade follows the banks of the river Danube, guiding users to a number of distinct waterside locations whilst providing varied views and new perspectives across the water. The Donaupark provides the town with a direct connection to the river and with a concentration of activities closer to the town in the east, the park is increasingly extensive in design as it stretches westwards.
